In memory of Admiral Sir Peter Herbert, the Parish Council have installed a plaque by the horse trough in Back Lane, opposite his old home Glebe House.
Sir Peter gave a great deal of his time to Bourton on the Hill, helping on the St Lawrence’s Parochial Church Council, setting up the Old School Committee, acting as a trustee of the Help in Need Trust, as a Parish Councillor and even setting up the village newsletter. Many of us remember him as a wonderful friend and neighbour.
The plaque highlights some of Sir Peter’s roles on the national stage. He was a distinguished submariner of the Cold War era, commanding the first Valiant class nuclear submarines, which were the most advanced warships in service at the time. His career encompassed other high profile roles, some of which are also mentioned on the plaque.
